Why he might be annoying:

    He was addicted to gambling.
    He was a womanizer.
    He kept a secret room at the Grand Opera House where he seduced women.
    He hated Catholics, children, and the poor.
    He refused to donate to charity.
    He underpaid his personal secretary.
    His seems to have married his wife, Theresa, for her money.
    He continued sleeping around after he was married.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was a self-made millionaire.
    He was reported missing two weeks after he vanished.
    Arthur Conan Doyle thought of investigating his disappearance.
    He appears as a character in Michael Ondaatje's 'In the Skin of a Lion.'
    Ironically, his wife was a devout Catholic who left her fortune (including his estate) to the Catholic church upon her death.
    His disappearance has never been solved.
