Due to his surname, some hockey fans wrongfully assumed he was related to Jonathan Toews.
He was traded from the Islanders for salary cap reasons, and to avoid being claimed by the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 expansion draft.
He admitted he got emotional when he got the phone call saying he was traded to Colorado.

He survived a near-fatal bus crash as a teenager.
He defied the odds and earned himself a roster spot with Surrey of the BCHL, paving his way to earning a scholarship at Quinnipac University.
He earned All-Academic honors during his freshman season at Quinnipac (2013-14).
He and his wife opted not to accept favors at their wedding, opting for donations to Hockey Fights Cancer instead.
He established himself as a top four defenseman, upon being traded to the Avalanche.
