Why he might be annoying:

    He had a large stature for a pitcher.
    His name literally translates into Joe Table from Spanish to English.
    He was charged with rape and gross sexual imposition (December 22, 1996).
    He blew a crucial save in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series, which eventually cost the Indians their first championship victory since 1948.
    He was accused of being emotionless after he cost the Indians the World Series.
    He had a longstanding feud with Omar Vizquel following that game.
    He threatened to bean Vizquel in retaliation for disparaging remarks the latter made about him in his autobiography and made good on his threat.
    When asked about it, he said his young son also enabled him to bean Vizquel out of retaliation.
    He played on six different teams following his unceremonious departure from Cleveland.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He originally began his career as an outfielder, prior to being converted to a pitcher.
    He flourished in the closer’s role after he was converted to a reliever under Mike Hargrove in Cleveland.
    He was considered one of the American League’s top closers during the mid-1990’s.
    He recorded 321 career saves, with the majority of them coming during his tenure with the Indians.
    He left the Phillies as the franchise’s second all-time leader in saves.
    His son, Jose Mesa, Jr. followed in his footsteps and pursued a career in baseball.
