Played in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens (1947-61), New York Rangers (1961-64), Detroit Red Wings (1966-67) and St. Louis Blues (1967-69)
Seven-time winner of the Norris Trophy as best defenseman (1955-58,1960-62)
Co-founder of the first NHL Players Association (1957)
Elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame (1973)

Why he might be annoying:

He was bipolar and an alcoholic.
He ruptured Red Sullivan's spleen with a vicious spearing.
After one season as a player-coach for the Rangers, he relinquished coaching duties because he preferred to 'go out and take a beer with the boys.'
The Canadiens resented his involvement with the players' association so much that they would not retire his number until a dozen years after he had been elected to the Hall of Fame (1985).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was blacklisted by several teams for helping organize a players' union.
He could set the pace of a game with his puck control.
Teammate Tom Johnson said, 'He could have played center, he could have played left wing, he could have played goal. There was no part of the game he couldn't do.'
