The Resume

    (June 8, 1978- )
    Born in Jackson, Kentucky
Birth name was John Sturgill Simpson
Recorded the albums 'High Top Mountain' (2013), 'Metamodern Sounds in Country Music' (2014), 'A Sailor's Guide to Earth' (2016), 'Sound & Fury' (2019), 'Cuttin' Grass, Vol. 1: The Butcher Shop Sessions' (2020), 'Cuttin' Grass, Vol. 2: The Cowboy Arms Sessions' (2020), and 'The Ballad of Dood and Juanita' (2021)

Why he might be annoying:

He sold drugs and experiment with LSD while in high school.
He deliberately made 'Sound & Fury' difficult to market, leaving Elektra Records with 'a giant un-recouped debt.'
He frequently hints that his latest album or tour might be his last.
He says he does not understand why critics and listeners are always comparing him to Waylon Jennings.
During the presentation of the 2017 CMA Awards, he spent the evening busking on the sidewalk outside the venue, with his Grammy in his guitar case.

Why he might not be annoying:

He has been nominated for Grammys in the Americana Album, Country Album, and Rock Album categories. (And the overall Album of the Year as well.)
Since one of the people likening him to Waylon Jennings is Waylon's son Shooter, he concedes that there must be something to the comparisons.
In an interview, Merle Haggard named Simpson as the only contemporary country singer he liked: 'As far as I'm concerned, he's the only one out there. The rest of them sound like a bunch of crap to me.' (2013)
He raised $13 for the ACLU busking at the CMAs, so 'It was all worth it.'
