They thought they were going to board a UFO when the Hale-Bopp comet appeared.
They are the largest group suicide on U.S. Territory.

Why Heaven's Gate might not be annoying:

They were neat freaks.
When they committed suicided, they did so by poisoning themselves and sleeping in body bags.
They were techie heads who designed web sites.
They put up a web site that explains their history.
