He was nicknamed 'Captain Hook' for his habit of taking starting pitchers out of the game early.
He was fired from a Triple-A team for temper problems.
He had a nervous breakdown in the 1989 season and the Tigers lost 103 games that year.
He took a leave of absence in 1995 during the players' strike, because he refused to manage replacement players.

Why he might not be annoying:

As a child, he played baseball with members of The Little Rascals.
When hired by the Cincinnati Reds, he promised they would win the 1970 pennant by 10 games and ended up winning by 14½.
He is the only manager to win a World Series in both American and National Leagues.
He created CATCH, an organization that helps underprivileged children in Detroit.
