The Resume

    (May 13, 1883-February 19, 1962)
    Born in Kymi, Euboea, Greece
    Also known as George Papanicolaou
Greek physician, scientist and pioneer of cytology and early cancer detection
In 1928, introduced the procedure known as Papanicolaou's test, now more commonly known as the Pap smear
Wrote the books 'Diagnosis of Uterine Cancer by the Vaginal Smear' (1943) and 'Atlas of Exfoliative Cytology' (1954)
Died of heart failure in Miami at age 78

Why he might be annoying:

His wife's full name was Andromachque Mavroyeni Papanicolaou.
He studied the menstrual cycles of guinea pigs (guess you gotta start somewhere).
He wrote, 'The first observation of cancer cells in the smear of the uterine cervix gave me one of the greatest thrills I ever experienced during my scientific career ' (while his patient was less than thrilled).
His picture was printed on the 10,000 drachmas banknote for just six years (1995-2001), then disappeared as Greece converted to the Euro.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served in the Greek Army (1911-13).
He taught anatomy at Cornell University for 48 years (1913-61).
In 1928, he became a naturalized U.S. citizen.
The scientific community initially doubted the significance of his Pap smear, but came around as more women were being diagnosed and treatment began saving lives.
In 1950, he was the recipient of the Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research.
He founded the Papanicolaou Cancer Research Institute at the University of Miami in 1961, but died a year later before it was formally opened.
In 1960, the American Medical Association recommended annual Pap smears for women, leading to a 70% drop rate of cervical cancer in North America, and prolonging the lives of millions of women.
