    Born in Lima, Peru
    Dominican priest and Roman Catholic theologian
    Considered one of the founders of Liberation Theology
    Wrote ‘A Theology of Liberation’ (1971) and ‘On Job (1987)
    John Cardinal O’Hara Professor of Theology at Notre Dame

Why he might be annoying:

    He initially studied medicine planning to be a psychiatrist before he realized he’d rather be a priest.
    Then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger asked Peruvian bishops to examine his writings for Marxist influences (1989).
    He said that having to reread his writings three times to defend them to the Vatican was ‘a new form of torture.’

Why he might not be annoying:

    He is half-Hispanic, half-indigenous Peruvian.
    He suffered from osteomyelitis as an adolescent and was frequently bedridden or in a wheelchair.
    He said the central question of his work is ‘How do we convey to the poor that God loves them?’
    Pope Francis thanked him on his 90th birthday for his contributions ‘to the church and humanity through your theological service and your preferential love for the poor and discarded of society.’
