Military Personnel
    (July 5, 1801-August 14, 1870)
First person to be promoted to Admiral in the U.S Navy (1870)
Served in U.S Naval forces during the war of 1812 (1812)
Protected merchant ships from pirates as part of Porters' Mosquito Fleet (1823-1824)
Served in the Mexican War (1845-1848)
Established and commanded the Mare Island Naval Yards in California (1854-1858)
Fought for the Union in the Civil War as Commander of the U.S.S Hartford (1861-1865)
Named as Commander of the Western Gulf Blockading Squadron (1861)
Captured New Orleans (April 28, 1862)
    Captured Mobile Bay (April, 1865)
Until the Civil War, his career was average.
Many of his battle tactics placed both his ship and crew at risk.
He often suffered from nausea at sea and during several key battles of the Civil War requested to be tied to the masts to keep upright.
Both his parents died while he was young.
He took command of his first ship at age 10.
He rose from the rank of Midshipman to become a four star Admiral.
He was known for being calm under pressure.
He was quoted as saying to a hesitant Captain during battle, 'Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.'
His victories in the Civil War served the Union by opening the Mississippi for supplies, scaring off European involvement and providing Union soldiers on land with a morale boost.
