Artist

The Resume

    (September 9, 1928-April 8, 2007)
    Born in Hartford, Connecticut
Painter, sculptor, muralist, and conceptual artist
    Created over 1,200 wall drawings
Designed modular sculptures based on open cubes
Taught at New York University and the School of Visual Arts

Why he might be annoying:

He preferred to call his sculptures 'structures.'
One of his conceptual artworks was buried in a garden and given the title 'Buried Cube Containing an Object of Importance but Little Value.' (1968)
He said about conceptual art, 'The idea becomes a machine that makes the art.'
His wall drawings and modular sculptures -- sorry, modular structures -- were usually executed by assistants following his designs.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served in the Korean War in Special Services, designing posters.
He spent a year as a graphic designer for I.M. Pei (1955).
He would help younger artists get exposure by holding joint exhibitions with them.
He noted that no one criticized architects for not actually laying the bricks for the buildings they design.
