Leading 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth, he gave up a three run homer to Bobby Thompson, giving the New York Giants the game and the pennant (known as the 'home run heard around the world' - October 3, 1951).

Why he might not be annoying:

He has no superstitions.
He wore #13 on his jersey and posed with black cats.
When interviewed after giving up the home run, he said 'Why me? Why me? Why is it always me?' (Sounds like Nancy Kerrigan)
He eventually said that because of his religious beliefs, God knew he could handle it.
