Why he might be annoying:

When he first moved to Nashville and money was tight, he would shoplift food from minimarts.
He drank heavily and snorted cocaine in the 70s and 80s.
Although plenty of his songs became hits in cover versions, the best he could do as a performer was barely denting Billboard’s Country Top 40 with ‘The Partner Nobody Chose’ (#38 in 1981).
He noted about his reputation among his peers, ‘It’s flattering, I guess, but you can’t make a fucking living being a songwriter’s songwriter.’
He continued smoking while battling cancer.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was also a talented luthier who built most of the guitars he played.
He and his wife were lifelong friends of Townes Van Zandt, and after Van Zandt’s death he always covered at least one Van Zandt song on each of his albums.
He helped Steve Earle and Lyle Lovett get their first contracts with music publishers.
His songs became #1 country hits for Ricky Skaggs (‘Heartbroke’) and Rodney Crowell (‘She’s Crazy for Leavin’’).
Rodney Crowell said, ‘He didn’t want to just write a hit. He wanted to write something that had real intrinsic value.’
