Why he might be annoying:

He changed the spelling of the family name, possibly in an effort to downplay his Irish roots.
He slept with a loaded pistol under his pillow and would shoot it out the window in the morning.
He initially opposed the marriage of his daughter Charlotte and did not attend the ceremony.
He is better remembered for his kids than any of his own achievements.

Why he might not be annoying:

He won a scholarship to Cambridge.
He encouraged his children's literary efforts.
He was well-liked by his parishoners, and was active in local causes into his old age.
He outlived his wife (by 40 years) and all his children.
He commissioned Elizabeth Gaskell to write Charlotte's biography and was repaid by being depicted as a neglectful parent and 'half-mad eccentric.'
The worst stories about him were the inventions of a disgruntled nurse who had been fired from the household.
