Why he might be annoying:

    He had no charisma.
    He was called 'the champion no one cares about' by Sports Illustrated.
    He played at Sun City in South Africa during the apartheid era.
    To prepare for the US Open, he hired the workers who laid the hardcourt surfaces at Flushing Meadow to install an exact copy at his home in Connecticut.
    He dismissed Andre Agassi as 'a forehand and a haircut.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    Tennis magazine called him 'the game's greatest overachiever.'
    He said, 'If I don't practice the way I should, then I won't play the way I know I can.'
    He won three consecutive tournaments played on three different surfaces (1980).
    After retiring from tennis, he took up golf and worked his way down to a zero handicap.
    He founded a charity competition, the Ivan Lendl Celebrity Golf Tournament (2004).
