Military Personnel

The Resume

    (September 16, 1745-April 28, 1813)
    Born in St. Petersburg, Russia
    Russian Field Marshall
Commanded the Russian Army during the War of the Third Coalition (1804-05)
Commanded the successful Russian defense against Napoleon's invasion (1812-13)

Why he might be annoying:

    He owned over 4,000 serfs.
His full name was the unwieldy Mikhail Illarionovich Golenishchev-Kutuzov.
He was relieved of command after the Russian defeat at Austerlitz (November 11, 1805).
Tzar Alexander I called him 'a hatcher of intrigues and an immoral and thoroughly dangerous character.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He twice survived being shot in the head, during campaigns against the Crimean Tartars (1774) and the Ottoman Empire (1787).
In addition to his native Russian, he was fluent in English, French, German, Swedish, Polish, and Turkish.
His only son died from smallpox as an infant.
Most military historians place the blame for the loss at Austerlitz on Tzar Alexander for overruling Kutuzov's recommendation to wait for reinforcements to arrive before attacking.
His attrition campaign reduced Napoleon's Grand Army from 600,000 men at the start of the invasion to 110,000 leaving Russia.
The Order of Kutuzov is the second highest military honor in Russia. (Ranking behind the Order of Zhukov.)
