Nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award for ‘To Leslie’

Why she might be annoying:

She listed her childhood celebrity crush as Peter Sellers.
She said: ‘If I weren't an actress I'd like to be an author. Either that or the proprietor of a pool hall in Texas where I'd show cabaret with homosexual undertones!’ (dare to dream!).
Her Oscar nomination came as a genuine surprise to many considering that it was the only nomination for an Independent film and that her performance had not received any major nominations prior.
Her nomination was the product of an unconventional Oscar buzz campaign that involved celebrity word-of-mouth (and which may have violated an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rule against directly lobbying voters).
Many saw her nomination as coming at the expense of other actresses - mainly actresses of color (mainly Viola Davis And Danielle Deadwyler, who were expected to be nominated but who both were snubbed).
The award controversy led the Academy Board of Governors to announce that they were reviewing ‘the campaign procedures around this year's nominees, to ensure that no guidelines were violated, and … whether changes to the guidelines may be needed in a new era of social media and digital communication’ (January 24, 2023).

Why she might not be annoying:

Madonna and Sarah Paulson like her.
She is an extremely versatile actress.
She made her film debut with a small part in ‘Venus’ with Peter O'Toole.
She received a BAFTA nomination for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in the BBC’s ‘The Long Walk to Finchley.’
She won critical acclaim for her performances in the Channel 4 miniseries ‘The Devil's Whore,’ in 2008, and ‘National Treasure,’ in 2016.
She appeared on the stage in Shakespeare's ‘Measure for Measure,’ and in Chekhov's Ivanov.
The Academy later announced that they would not rescind her Oscar nomination (January 31, 2023).
Very few disputing her Oscar nomination denied that she gave a great performance that wasn’t deserving, and most only took issue with the way the nomination was procured by distributors.
