The Resume

    (October 17, 1864-September 23, 1943)
    Birth name is Elinor Sutherland
Wrote ‘The Visits of Elizabeth (1900),' ‘Three Weeks (1907),' ‘His House (1910),' ‘These Things (1915),' ‘Beyond the Rocks (1922),' ‘Six Days (1924),' ‘It (1926),' ‘Love's Hour (1932)' and ‘The Third Eye (1940)'

Why she might be annoying:

Her prose is often beyond purple.
An infamous sex scene on a tiger skin rug in ‘Three Weeks' shocked prudes everywhere.
‘Three Weeks' inspired a parody called ‘Too Weak' by ‘Ellova Gryn.'
She is lampooned in this ditty: ‘Would you like to sin/With Elinor Glyn/On a tiger skin/Or perhaps you'd prefer/To err with her/On some other fur?'
She hosted salons at which she read poetry while reclining on a (what else?) tiger skin rug.
Anita Loos wrote, ‘If Hollywood hadn't existed, Elinor Glyn would have had to invent it.'

Why she might not be annoying:

She was the first popular novelist to reject Victorian mores.
Her liberated outlook made her a mentor to the flapper generation.
She was a war correspondent during World War I and witnessed the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.
In England, she was sometimes called a ‘colonial nobody' because her parents were Canadian.
Famous Players-Lasky hired her in 1920 to work as a consultant, and she became part of the Hollywood in-crowd.
She originated the slang term ‘it' meaning sex appeal.
A film adaptation of her novella ‘It' made Clara Bow a star.
‘Three Weeks' was reissued in 1974 to generally good reviews.
