The Resume

    (July 25, 1875-April 19, 1955)
    Born in Nainital, India
Birth name was Edward James Corbett
Colonel in the British Indian Army
Called on to hunt man-eating animals
Killed 19 tigers and 14 leopards
Wrote 'Man-Eaters of Kumaon' (1944), 'My India' (1952), 'Jungle Lore' (1953), 'The Temple Tiger and More Man-Eaters of Kumaon' (1954) and 'Tree Tops' (1955)

Why he might be annoying:

As a young adult, he accompanied poachers on illegal hunts.
During his last tiger hunt, the recoil from his shot caused him to fall off the ledge where he was sitting and land on four other men in his party (1938).
During WWII, he volunteered to train Allied troops in jungle survival, but had to withdraw when the stress made him seriously ill.
When 'Man-Eaters of Kumaon' was (very loosely) adapted into a Hollywood film, he observed, 'The best actor was the tiger.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He first hunted leopards at age ten.
The animals he killed were estimated to have collectively eaten over 1,200 people.
He refused to accept any rewards for hunting man-eaters.
He became a conservationist and played a key role in establishing India's first national park, which was renamed in his honor after his death.
When he left India for Kenya (1947), he divided his estate into 40 plots and gave them to local villagers. He also reportedly continued paying the property taxes on the land on the villagers' behalf until his death.
