He died when he was only 35 years old.
He went by the name Jaco.
He was manically depressive.
He did drugs and drank heavily.
He was beaten into a coma by a bouncer at a Santana concert, which eventually led to his death.
The bouncer that beat him to death only served four months in prison.

He is wildly regarded as one of the most influential bass players ever, even transcending his own musical genre.
He popularized the fretless bass guitar.
His self titled album was hailed as one of the best bass albums ever.
He played with Pat Metheny, Joe Zawinul, Joni Mitchell and Weather Report amongst others.
His birthday is still annually celebrated by his fans.
