Why he might be annoying:

He was married three times, divorced twice.
He admitted his restrained style 'spells stuffiness to a lot of people.'
Detractors of his on-air editorializing called him 'Eric Severalsides' and 'Eric Everyside.'
He appeared as himself in 'The Right Stuff' (1983) and an episode of Taxi.
During a radio show with Walter Cronkite, he said, 'Look at black Africa. There's very little there that's worth much in 20th century terms.'

Why he might not be annoying:

At 17, he embarked on a 2,200 mile canoe trip from Minneapolis to Hudson Bay, then wrote a successful book about the trip, 'Canoeing with the Cree.'
During World War II, he bailed out of a plane with engine trouble and wound up living with a tribe of Burmese headhunters for a month.
His memoir 'Not So Wild a Dream' was named one of the ten best books of the year by the New York Times (1946).
He was protege of Edward R. Murrow, and like Murrow, was an early critic of Joseph McCarthy.
He won two Emmys and three Peabody Awards.
Time magazine called him 'among the most articulate, most literate and most judicious of television sages.'
