Chess Champ

The Resume

    (1989-1998)
    Developed by IBM
Main programmers were Feng-hsiung Hsu and Murray Campbell
    Lost a six-game match to Gary Kasparov 4 points to 2 (1996)
Won the rematch 3.5-2.5 (1997), becoming the first computer to defeat a reigning chess champion

Why Deep Blue might be annoying:

IBM denied Kasparov access to Deep Blue's recent games, putting him at a disadvantage.
Its developers were allowed to adjust its program between games, thus allowing it to avoid a trap in the final game it had fallen for twice before.
When Kasparov demanded a rematch, IBM refused and retired Deep Blue.
According to the documentary 'Game Over,' its matches with Kasparov were part of a ploy by IBM to boost its stock price.
It did not fare nearly as well when it took on David Robinson in basketball for a Nike ad.

Why Deep Blue might not be annoying:

It could analyze 200,000,000 positions per second.
Its name was a combination of IBM's 'Big Blue' nickname and the computer Deep Thought from 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.'
Part of its hardware is on display at the Smithsonian, part at the Computer History Museum.
Upon beating Kasparov, it did not become self-aware and start killing off the inferior humans.
