The Resume

    (April 27, 1827-August 31, 1869)
    Born in Ballylin, Ireland
    Birth name was Mary King
Wrote the books 'Sketches with the Microscope' and 'Telescope Teachings'
Began collecting insects at age three
Died after falling off an experimental steam car and run over at age 42
Self taught in the field of microscopy
One of only three women on the mailing list for the Royal Astronomical Society (the other two were Queen Victoria and Mary Sommerville)

Why she might be annoying:

Her work went underappreciated as women of her time were not allowed to attend college or earn degrees.
Her husband was a social gadabout who showed little interest in her work.
Her first book was privately published as book companies weren't interested in the scientific teachings of a female.
She has the sad distinction of becoming the first fatality of an automobile accident.

Why she might not be annoying:

She was encouraged by her parents to pursue her dreams and bought her first microscope.
She prepared her own slides of specimens and drew her own illustrations for her books.
Two of her eight children died before turning one.
Now hailed as an expert in her field, her microscope, slides and books are on public display at Castle Ward, County Down, Ireland.
After one of her books was retitled and found a publisher, it was reprinted eight times and became a bestseller.
