He wanted to be a pro football player but didn't make it.
His stocky build kept him from lead roles in movies.
Most of his TV appearances were in the law enforcement vein.
He divorced his first wife and mother of his only child.

He served in World War II as a B-24 navigator, was shot down and spent two years as a German POW.
After his release he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart.
He was steadily employed every year as an actor from 1963 up until his 1985 death.
He was fondly remembered and warmly eulogized by his 'Gimme a Break' co-star Nell Carter.
