Why he might be annoying:

His popularity never crossed the Atlantic to the US.
When he hosted an American variety series, it lasted less than three months (June-August, 1971).
His trademark was ending his show by singing a ballad while sitting in a rocking chair.
He recorded a bunch of Irish novelty tunes.
He disliked watching his show: 'It felt embarrassing seeing myself.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was married to Lynette Rae for 53 years.
He was named BBC TV Personality of the Year (1966).
He appeared three times in Royal Variety Performances.
His 'Val Doonican Rocks, But Gently' was the first album by an Irish performer to top the British charts (1968).
Rock critic Neil McCormick wrote, 'It's amazing to think that a time when the Rolling Stones and the Beatles were having such an impact, this Irish singer in a rocking chair was as famous as all of them.'
