Critic

The Resume

    (March 1, 1950- )
    Born in Detroit, Michigan
Rock critic for 'Creem,' 'Newsday,' 'The Village Voice,' 'Rolling Stone,' 'Playboy' and 'Rock and Rap Confidential'
Wrote or co-wrote the books 'Born to Run: The Bruce Springsteen Story' (1979), 'The Book of Rock Lists' (1980), 'Before I Get Old: The Story of the Who' (1983), 'Fortunate Son' (1983), 'Trapped: Michael Jackson and the Crossover Dream' (1986), 'Glory Days: Bruce Springsteen in the 80s' (1987), 'The Heart of Rock & Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made' (1989), 'Louie Louie' (1992), 'Merry Christmas Baby: Holiday Music From Bing to Sting' (1992), 'The New Book of Rock Lists' (1994), 'Mid-Life Confidential: The Rock Bottom Remainders Tour America with Three Chords and an Attitude' (1994) and 'Bruce Springsteen on Tour 1968-2005' (2006)
Hosts three shows on Sirius XM Radio: 'Kick Out the Jams,' 'Live from the E Street Nation' and 'Live from the Land of Hopes and Dreams'

Why he might be annoying:

He dropped out of college to become editor of Creem.
In 'The Book of Rock Lists,' he included himself on the list '10 Best Rock Critics.'
He wrote, 'Queen may be the first truly fascist rock band.'
As a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame selection committee, he is the main reason progressive rockers like Rush and Yes have trouble even getting nominated, much less inducted.
He complained about the election of Leonard Cohen and the Ventures to the Hall in 2008, saying 'The problem is, you've got a bunch of people who know a lot about music on the [nominating] committee, but then you have a lot of people doing the voting who don't.' (If the nominating committee is so darn smart, why did they put guys they think shouldn't be in the Hall up for a vote in the first place?)

Why he might not be annoying:

He is passionate about rock music.
He was the first music critic to use the term 'punk rock,' in an essay about garage rockers ? and the Mysterians (1971).
He is a founder and trustee of the Kristin Ann Carr fund, created in memory of his daughter who died from sarcoma in 1993.
He doesn't have a complete stranglehold over the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, since several bands he dislikes (such as the Doors and Grateful Dead) made it in.
