Why he might be annoying:

He got the U.S. upset for falling behind the Russians in the space race.
While piloting a test flight, he crashed and died (March 27, 1968).

Why he might not be annoying:

He spent 108 minutes in a single orbit around the Earth.
His accomplishment cause President Kennedy to declare that the US would put a man on the Moon before the end of the decade.
When he was asked how he was able to sleep the night before the big launch, he replied: 'Would it be right to take off if I were not rested? It was my duty to sleep, so I slept.'
