He fought with his father over his artistic ambitions.
He failed an exam at a St. Petersburg art school.
He participated in the Russian Revolution.
He was made a Comissar of Art by the Soviets (but soon fell out of favor).
Some find his work childlike and sentimental.
He once painted himself with seven fingers.
He fathered a child out of wedlock after his wife died.

He was arrested in St. Petersburg for not having a resident's permit (required of Jews then).
In 1941 he fled Europe for the US to avoid Nazi persecution.
Joseph Goebbels had some of his paintings burned.
The Soviet Union ignored his work for years.
He thought art should celebrate life, not wallow in ennui.
His works has Christian as well as Jewish themes.
Shortly before his death, he was photographed by Bill Wyman.
