Baseball Player

The Resume

    (October 9, 1886-June 1, 1980)
    Born in Cleveland, Ohio
Birth name was Richard William Marquard
Pitcher for the New York Giants (1908-15), Brooklyn Robins (1916-20), Cincinnati Reds (1921) and Boston Braves (1922-25)
    201-177 win-loss record
    3.08 career ERA
    1,593 strikeouts
Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame (1971)

Why he might be annoying:

He was arrested for scalping World Series tickets (1920).
Sabermetricians criticized his selection for the Hall of Fame, arguing that his career adjusted ERA+ is only slightly better than the league average.
Bill James said he was 'probably the worst starting pitcher in the Hall of Fame.'
Many observers felt he made the Hall mainly due to his colorful interview in the popular book 'The Glory of Their Times.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was left handed.
He was nicknamed 'Rube' not for being a country bumpkin but because when he was in the minors a sportswriter compared his pitching favorably with Rube Waddell.
He won 19 games in a row (1912), which has remained the record for a century.
The Sporting News called him 'one of the most likable fellows in the game.'
