Why he might be annoying:

He claimed he was straight despite playing flamboyantly gay characterswell.
He appeared in those grating PBS pledge drives.
He hds a gap in his front teeth.
Gay groups slammed him for his campy and effeminate portrayal of Mr. Humphries.
He was a homebody who tried to disguise his appearances in public with a baseball cap.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was arguably the most popular character on AYBS.
His true sexuality would be a great topic for an 'Unsolved Mysteries' episode.
PBS's incessant showing of AYBS had made him a star on both sides of the Atlantic.
Readers of TV Times magazine voted him the 'Funniest Man on Television.'
The Variety Club of Great Britain selected him TV personality of the year.
