Why he might be annoying:

He tends to talk very fast.
He said he was ‘super nervous’ about following up the best-selling ‘The Fault in Our Stars’: ‘I felt very scared of writing because I was in the shadow of this success.’
His followers are called ‘nerdfighters,’ a name resulting from his misreading of the name of a video arcade game, Aero Fighters.
The official nerdfighter ‘gang sign’: arms crossed across one’s chest with both hands delivering the Vulcan ‘live long and prosper’ salute.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was bullied as a teen.
‘Looking for Alaska’ won the America Library Association’s Printz Award for best book written for teens.
He signed all 150,000 books in the first printing of ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ so fans unable to attend a book signing could still get an autographed copy.
