Why he might be annoying:

His name sounds like the musical duo of Gilbert & Sullivan.
He quit art school and worked in a London department store until he got a record deal.
'Clair,' a song about babysitting his manager's little girl (he was 25 when he recorded it), would today raise a few eyebrows from children's advocate groups.
He spent most of the '80s in courtroom battles with his former manager (Clair's dad) over legal rights to his songs (he eventually won). Subsequent records were met on both sides of the Atlantic with a collective yawn.

Why he might not be annoying:

'Alone Again (Naturally)' hit the top of the Billboard charts in the summer of 1972 and stayed there for an incredible 6 weeks.
He is left handed, and even recorded a album called 'Southpaw' (1977).
He successfully sued rapper Biz Markie for the unauthorized sample of his song 'Alone Again (Naturally),' when a judge's landmark ruling agreed the sample was in fact music theft.
The use of 'Alone Again (Naturally)' in 'Masion Ikkoku,' a popular Japanese animated TV series, helped create a new legion of fans in Japan.
'Alone Again (Naturally)' has been covered (legally) by such diverse artists as Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Andy Williams, Bobby Darin, and Ally McBeal's Vonda Shepard.
