He won the 1992 Winston Cup Championship despite only winning 2 races compared to runner-up Bill Elliott's 5 wins in the same season.
He was sponsored by Hooters when he won the championship.

Why he might not be annoying:

He graduated the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with an engineering degree.
He was the first college graduate to be a Nascar Champion.
He was the first 'northerner' to be a Nascar Champion.
He turned down a chance to drive for a top team and went on to beat out that same team for the championship in 1992.
He turned down the ride with a top team out of loyalty to the crew members who stuck with him through his career.
He overcame a record 278 point deficit in the final 6 races to win the 1992 Championship.
After winning his first Nascar race in 1988 at Phoenix, Arizona, he did a victory lap in the opposite direction called the 'Polish Victory Lap.'
He died in a plane crash just outside of Bristol, TN before a race weekend.
He was very well-liked by his competitors.
He was the first owner-driver to win the championship since Richard Petty in 1979.
He came to Nascar with two cars, two engines and two crew members.
His team didn't have as many resources as the other teams but was able to still run as well as any of the top teams.
A scholarship fund was set-up in his honor.
