Why he might be annoying:

He announced for the Atlanta Crackers.
He's given testimonials during Billy Graham's crusades.
He was fired as Tigers broadcaster in 1990 because Tigers management wanted to go in a 'new direction.'
Although he was awarded the Ford C. Frick Award, he isn't an official member of baseball's Hall of Fame.

Why he might not be annoying:

As early as sixteen, he was working for 'The Sporting News.'
He was a Marine.
He's been married to the same woman, Lulu, since 1941.
He called Bobby Thompson's 'Shot Heard 'Round the World.'
He received the Ford C. Frick Award in 1981.
He was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame (1998).
Baseball fans in Detroit still love him after all these years and to this day enjoy hearing him call play by play for their team.
