U.S. Governor

The Resume

    (April 11, 1919-August 7, 2011)
    Born in Brooklyn, New York
    Governor of New York (1975-1982)
Represented New York's 12th (1961-63) and 15th district (1963-74) districts in the House of Representatives
Credited with stabilizing New York City's economy during the mid-1970s

Why he might be annoying:

His name sounds like Drew Carey.
His tenure as governor was overshadowed by his successor's.
He flip-flopped on the topic of abortion rights throughout his career.
He fended off questions about whether his relationship with Ford Motor heiress, Anne Ford-Uzielli, whom he was dating, during his second reelection bid.
When pressed about whether he would ever marry Ford, he coyly answered: 'If I don't win, who will want me?'
His short-lived marriage to Evangeline Gouletas was a public relations nightmare that sparked controversy with the Catholic Church, since he married a thrice-divorced woman in a Greek Orthodox Church (he later called it 'his greatest failure').

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a decorated veteran who rose to the rank of Colonel.
While serving in the Army during World War II, his unit liberated the Nordhausen concentration camp from the Nazis.
His first wife had died shortly before he began his term as governor.
He was the one of the first members of congress to oppose the Vietnam War.
As governor, he pushed for increased federal funds for job programs and welfare/unemployment benefits.
He saved New York City from the brink of bankruptcy during the 1975 fiscal crisis, mainly via the I Love New York campaign and The Empire State Games.
His first co-sponsored bill provided state grant programs for kids with disabilities for the first time ('The Carey Bill').
