    Many labor leaders initially did not support her confirmation.

    She was the fifth Clinton cabinet officer to be investigated by independent counsel.
    She was seen as a shoo-in for the Al Gore administration, and even served on his Presidential transition team in 2000 (and we all know how that turned out).

    She earned praise from her peers for her handling of the 1997 UPS workers strike, the largest strike in the United States in two decades.
    She stood in the firestorm of contentious disputes.
    After a twenty-three month investigation, an Independent Council concluded that she had broken no laws and cleared her of all wrongdoing (April 2000).
    She has been awarded more than 20 honorary doctorate degrees from academic institutions.
