Why he might be annoying:

    He was fat, warty and effeminate.
    His books are preachy.
    Some find them incredibly boring.
    ‘Clarissa’ is one of the longest novels in history.
    The writer Henry Fielding hated ‘Pamela’ so much that he wrote a parody and called it ‘Shamela.’
    He upset readers of his time by depicting rapes and other graphic scenarios.
    He was a serious child.
    He would often write love letters to men on behalf of his female friends.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He didn’t write anything at all until 51, and then became an overnight success.
    He wrote about sex in an explicit way (for the time).
    He was a successful publisher.
    Seven of his children died as babies.
    He influenced Jane Austen.
    His novels are still studied today.
