Biblical Character

The Resume

    ( -circa 2000 BC)
    Lived in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq)
Married to Lot (nephew of Abraham)
Fled Sodom with Lot and their daughters after God decided to destroy the city
Was turned into a pillar of salt after she turned to look back at Sodom

Why she might be annoying:

Her actual name is never mentioned in the bible.
She disobeyed an angel’s clear warning to not look back.
She is criticized in the New Testament for not wanting to abandon her old life.
She is known largely for the bizarre way she died.
She was called a ‘salty character’ on an episode of ‘Jeopardy.’

Why she might not be annoying:

It’s easy to sympathize with her wish for one last look at her home.
She had no say in her fate and was expected to follow Lot wherever he went.
Her husband had earlier taken it upon himself to offer their teenage daughters to a mob.
She may have been buried in an explosion of salt deposits rather than literally turning into salt.
A rock salt pillar near the Dead Sea is called ‘Lot’s Wife.’
