Nurse

The Resume

    (November 12, 1606-June 18, 1673)
    Born in Langres, Haute-Marne, France
Co-founder of the Greater Montreal area and the Hotel-Dieu Hospital
Member of the Societe Notre-Dame de Montreal (Society of Our Lady of Montreal)
Subject of ‘The Saintly Life of Jeanne Mance: the First Lay Nurse in North America (1945)’
    Nicknamed ‘Angel of the Colony’
    Roman Catholic

Why she might be annoying:

The premature death of her mother left her to be the primary caregiver for her 11 siblings.
By age 20, she was an orphan.
She devoted herself openly to God, as if nothing else in the world was important.
On her way back from Mass, she slipped on a patch of ice and damaged her right arm — which would affect her autonomy (and her mood) for a few years.
She attributed the full and sudden healing of her arm to… a heart kept in a chest.

Why she might not be annoying:

In many a respect, she was the 17th-century French-Canadian equivalent of Florence Nightingale.
A combination of war and epidemic in her north-eastern French town inspired her decision to become a nurse (in the 30 Years War).
Because of the constant battle between the Algonquin and Iroquois tribes, she was well-acquainted with battlefield medicine.
During her periodical returns to France, she secured physical and extra financial assistance for the hospital and the defense of the colony against the Iroquois.
A street in downtown Montreal is named in her honor.
