The Resume

    (April 18, 1979-July 4, 1984)
    Aired on NBC
Hosted by Sarah Purcell, Skip Stephenson and Byron Allen
Premise: Primetime newsmagazine featuring human interest stories, usually humorous ones

Why Real People might be annoying:

It was frequently confused with its imitators, inspiring the Mad parody 'That's Real Incredible, People.'
The producers passed over David Letterman in favor of Skip Stephenson when choosing hosts.
It gave Richard Simmons his first national TV exposure.
To increase the show's cuteness factor, Peter Billingsley was brought in to report on children's news (1982-84).

Why Real People might not be annoying:

For its first two seasons, it was one of NBC's highest rated series.
They covered some serious stories, including MIAs in Vietnam, the long-delayed recognition of the Navajo contribution in World War II and the Adam Walsh kidnapping.
If you sent in a funny picture that they used on the air, you would get a 'Real People' t-shirt.
