    Final Role was as Sato in Ridley Scott’s ‘Black Rain’ (1989)

    He received a suspended sentence for assault after putting a student in the hospital (1975).
    The same year he had gotten into a physical altercation with a pair of reporters.
    The negative publicity harmed his career and led to film studios and television companies dropping him.
    He refused chemotherapy after being diagnosed with bladder cancer (his wife later claimed that he underestimated the severity of the illness).

    He never met his birth father.
    He is considered one of Japan's most important film actors and remains a cultural icon there.
    He won the Hochi Film award for Best Actor in 1983.
    His 1975 assault case came after a student who attacked him with a wooden kendo after mistaking him for assaulting a woman.
    His professionalism on the set of Black Rain was praised (he was dying of cancer during filming and he passed away only weeks after the film’s release).
    Several manga, anime and video game characters are based on him (including Kenshiro in ‘Fist of the North Star’ and Spike Spiegel in ‘Cowboy Bebop’).
