The Resume

    (August 27, 1967-January 7, 2015)
    Born in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, France
    Cartoonist and journalist
Editor-in-chief of satirical French weekly Charlie Hebdo (2009-2015)
Murdered with eleven others in Charlie Hebdo's offices by Islamic extremists (January 7, 2015)

Why he might be annoying:

He was better known as 'Charb.'
    He was an abrasive atheist.
He insisted on caricaturing Muhammed even though many Muslims believe even drawing him is sacrilegious.
Some found his cartoons of blacks and Arabs offensive.
Charlie Hebdo's cofounder called him a 'blockhead' and said he provoked the attack.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was unfairly called a right-wing racist by much of the North American media. (He was actually left-wing and anti-racist.)
He lived under police protection after the offices of Charlie Hebdo were firebombed in 2013.
He targeted Muslim fundamentalism more than Islam itself.
He was an equal opportunity offender who also mocked Pope Benedict XVI.
He was on Al-Qaeda's most wanted list.
He said, 'I'd prefer to die on my feet than live on my knees.'
    Je suis Charlie.
