The Resume

    (February 3, 1947-January 23, 2024)
    Birth name is Melanie Safka
Recorded 'Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)' 'Brand New Key' 'Beautiful People' and 'The Nickel Song'

Why she might be annoying:

    She looks like Sally Field.
    She re-records her old songs.
She is a vegetarian; she even wrote the preachy 'I Don't Eat Animals' about it.
    She can't stand her voice.
She's another one of the 'one-name' people.
Enraged that she covered a Rolling Stones song, someone at a London concert threw a brick at her.
'Brand New Key' was banned by some radio stations for sexual undertones.
She is an icon of the 60s, yet her success peaked in the 70s.
She played Eric Clapton's 'Layla' while giving birth to her daugnter Leilah.
During a salary dispute, a DJ in Connecticut locked himself in the studio and continuely played her song 'Bitter End' for an entire weekend (1971).

Why she might not be annoying:

    She performed at Woodstock '69.
She has an optimistic and cheerful attitude; it's hard to find a picture of her without a big smile on her face.
At Woodstock, people lit candles during her set and held them in the air, the first known time that this was ever done at any concert.
That famous moment inspired one of her greatest songs, 'Lay Down (Candles In The Rain).'
The controversy over 'Brand New Key' helped make Melanie one of the top selling artists of 1971.
She still does nostalgia concerts all these years later, and periodically releases new material.
In 1983, she was scheduled to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London, but when she discovered it was cancelled, she instead performed on the steps outside for 200 fans until the police shut her down.
She was awarded an Emmy for a song she contributed to the TV show 'Beauty and the Beast.'
She was the first female folk rocker to have 3 records silmutaneously on the Billboard chart.
Ed Sullivan compared her performance to Elvis Presley on his show.
