    As a teen he was a welterweight boxer under the very ethnic sounding name Johnny Costello.
    He was chiefly a character actor and portrayed many an authority figure, usually military, law enforcement and political roles.
    He was involved in several failed TV series, including 'Norby' (1955), 'The Asphalt Jungle' (1961), 'The Wackiest Ship in the Army' (1965-66), 'Jigsaw John' (1976), 'The Bad News Bears' (1979-80) and 'Knight & Daye' (1989).
    He married and divorced French actress Vanda Dupre.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 17, then when his tour of duty was over promptly signed up to be a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division in the U.S. Army.
    He fought in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.
    While recuperating from a broken leg during a practice jump he read a Clifford Odets play and decided he wanted to be an actor.
    He won an Emmy Award portraying Chicago Bears coach George Halas in the TV movie 'Brian's Song' (1971).
    He was nominated twice for an Oscar as 'Best Actor in a Supporting Role' in 1976 for 'Shampoo' and 1979 for 'Heaven Can Wait.'
    He was steadily employed, appearing in either a TV show or movie between 1951-68, then between 1971-2000.
