Why they might be annoying:

Fans of the band refer to themselves as 'ninnies' and their NIN webpages as the 'ninternet.'
Trent's been known to beat up band members during concerts and destroy instruments.
Trent would rather play Quake and Diablo than work on full-length albums or tours.
Axl Rose was so impressed with the music that he asked them to tour with Guns N' Roses in Europe. During the tour, they were booed off every stage.

Why they might not be annoying:

Their performance during Woodstock '94 was one of the few memorable performances of the recent Woodstock concerts.
They had A Perfect Circle open for them in their last tour.
They've worked closely with Oliver Stone and David Lynch, providing production assistance and songs for their soundtracks.
Trent said of his slow working process: 'I tend to get bored when people start saying, 'Where's the record already?' Hey, I'm not fucking off in there. It just takes a long time. Nirvana may be able to make a record in two weeks. That's great. We're not doing that. To me, every song means reinventing the whole process.'
