Why he might be annoying:

He seemed to find acting work only in soap operas.
He gained several Daytime Emmy nominations, winning none.
He was very outspoken.
Upon leaving 'The Young and the Restless,' he complained to the press that his co-star and daughter of the show's producer, Lauralee Bell, was sapping up his screen time due to nepotism.

Why he might not be annoying:

He proved so popular on 'Y&R' as lothario 'Jack Abbott' that writers created an entire family for his character.
After his death, former co-star Thom Bierdz outted him as a gay man.
He was also an accomplished vocalist and pianist.
