Raised in Spanish Harlem section of New York City
Recorded music which was a fusion of Latin jazz genres that became known as 'salsa'
Recorded over 100 albums in a 60 year time span
Nicknames are 'King of the Mambo,' 'King of Latin Jazz' and 'El Rey'
Inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame (1995)

Why he might be annoying:

Though credited with creating the salsa music, he did not like the word being applied to his music, calling it a term for a condiment or sauce.
He first married at age forty.
He made several guest appearances on 'The Cosby Show' in the 1980s.
The popularity of his style of music peaked in the 1950s.
When he worked with RCA, they frequently held back some of his recordings, leaving tons of unreleased material.
He was the godfather of Prince's protege Sheila E.

He drew huge international crowds, selling out most of his concerts.
He recorded 118 solo albums, far surpassing Frank Sinatra for a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
His Latin music was popular with a diverse range of people.
Is music is great for dancing.
He earned his title 'King of Latin Music' when he beat out the Mambo King Perez Prado in a public contest of bands.
He won 10 Grammy awards.
A few of his songs become huge hits for Carlos Santana.
He made two guest appearances on 'The Simpsons' and recorded a song for them.
He almost always was seen smiling. He truly enjoyed performing.
He died after complications during heart surgery (2000).
