    His international travels while in office were criticized.
    He was prone to wearing flamboyantly colored bow ties as Mayor.
    He ran an aggressive publicity campaign to convince constituents to buy homes in the city, despite his failure to ever purchase a home in D.C. himself.
    His final day in office happened the same day as the Washington funeral for President Ford.

    He was adopted by a postal worker with seven kids when he was three.
    He joined the Air Force and volunteered for Vietnam, but was kept in the country to work domestically.
    After serving, he worked giving piano and clay sculpture lessons to blind children and counseling Vietnam War veterans in Los Angeles.
    He was credited with restoring dignity to the office of D.C. Mayor after Marion Barry’s humiliating second term.
    He had a reputation for being bipartisan and had a strong relationship with both the White House and Congress.
    MSNBC branded him ‘one of the best and most successful mayors in US history.’
