Why they might be annoying:

They formed in the wake of Tom Johnston and John Hartman's former band, Pud, breaking up.
They named themselves after the slang term for marijuana.
The Hell's Angels were fans of theirs.
Their debut album was considered a failure.
They changed the style of music they played in the late 70's after 'Stampede' didn't go on to sell as well as their three previous albums.
Tom Johnston left the band in 1978 to purse a would-be unsuccessful solo career.
They appeared in an episode of 'What's Happening' where they spoke out against bootlegging.
Their early 1970's lineup reunited without asking Baxter and McDonald if they'd care to join (1987).
    They have had many members.

Why they might not be annoying:

They signed to Warner Bros. a year after forming (1970).
Their song 'China Grove' is about a San Antonio suburb.
Jeff Baxter, of Steely Dan, was briefly a member of theirs.
After changing musical styles, they recorded 'Takin' It to the Streets,' which went on to become their second best selling album (1976).
They managed to continue being a successful band even after Tom Johnston and Jeff Baxter's departures.
    They had two drummers.
Their 1987 reunion album, 'Cycles,' went gold.
They allowed Michael McDonald re-join the band in 1995.
They were featured in a Behind the Music.
