Beauty Contestant

The Resume

    (April 24, 1989- )
    Born in Syracuse, New York
    Miss New York (2013)
Miss America 2014 (first Indo-American title holder)
National Honor Society member (Michigan Merit Award)

Why she might be annoying:

‘I’m so happy this organization has embraced diversity.’ Some Twitter users didn’t feel the same way — at first (e.g.‘how the fuck does a foreigner win miss America?' and ‘Miss America? You mean Miss 7-11’).
More than one peeved Twitter user misidentified her as ‘a Arab’ (‘So miss america is a terrorist?’ ‘Congratulations Al-Qaeda. Our Miss America is one of you’ ).
Having learned that the state governor was making the rounds in the wake of a boardwalk fire in the Jersey Shore area, her own trip was canceled by pageant officials.
Ironically, Indo writers believed her skin tone meant the odds would have been against her winning a Miss India pageant (and more favorable to someone like her predecessor).
She punctuates her tweets of her cooking with the #Yummo hashtag.
    She battled with bulimia.

Why she might not be annoying:

While she is the first South Asian Miss America, only one other Asian precedes her.
As a native of Syracuse, New York, she has valid grounds for not considering herself a foreigner.
As if to emphasize her platform of ‘celebrating diversity through cultural competency,’ her routine during the talent portion was a Bollywood dance — for which she initially missed her cue!
Naturally, family is of great significance to her (one Twitter message read, ‘love mah fam!’).
One of her single greatest pageant supporters was her 89-year-old grandmother, who phoned from the homeland.
She managed to knock off 50 pounds before the pageant.
She said, 'For every negative comment, there were a dozen positive messages.'
Well, you can’t please the entire Twitterverse!
